YPR Stands in Solidarity
Dear YPR Community,
YPR stands with the Black community: Black lives matter. YPR vehemently rejects all forms of racism, implicit and explicit. YPR condemns unjust law enforcement, unjust judicial systems, and police brutality.
YPR’s core values are community, caring, respect, inclusion, and commitment. YPR’s vision is a world where all young people have the resources they need to thrive in recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol. We aspire to create lasting change in the recovery community, and society at large. We acknowledge that this change starts from within and that we can do better.
It is our responsibility to use YPR’s platform to advance calls for racial equity in addiction recovery. YPR condemns all health inequity and seeks to eliminate barriers to health due to racism. We will advocate for eradicating the discriminatory policies and laws that disproportionately affect Black communities, that target people with substance use disorders and people who use drugs who need treatment and recovery. We will advocate to remove the systemic barriers these communities experience in accessing treatment and recovery support services.
We take accountability to deepen our understanding on these issues, and will examine our past actions. To achieve our goals, we have convened a committee on diversity and inclusion with the mandate to:
• Elevate Black leaders, experiences, and stories at YPR and in the recovery movement.
• Continue to diversify our staff, board, and membership in order to actualize racial equity.
• Expand our programs and chapters further into communities of color.
• Advocate to address inequality in the criminal justice and healthcare systems.
Our program and chapter teams work very hard, and have done an incredible job bringing YPR life skills programs, peer supports, and 54 chapters to communities across the nation. As we work to build out our commitments, we will rely on you—our community—to hold us accountable. Young People in Recovery recognizes the incredible responsibility that rests on our collective shoulders and we wholeheartedly embrace this positive change.
Sincerely and in solidarity,
President & CEO
